Mail Art

I've been working with these three elements for awhile. A pair of glasses, a mouth, a hand. I think I did the first one in the fall of 2016.  They made me laugh so I started to collect these images from magazines.

When I was notified that Micro Galleries was doing another event, I submitted a few images to see if they'd be interested and they were.

Yay, these pieces will be seen in Jakarta, Indonesia. I hope they "translate" visually for people of a different culture.

I'll have a total of 27, and will label them with letters of the alphabet for simplicity.

I'm not sure how they'll be displayed, but they'll be kept original size which is 4" x 7" (10.16cmX17.78)

It's interesting how the space between the eyes and the mouth changes the expression, right?  Why don't you make some and show them to me. I'll include them on my blog, if you'd like.






 

I did some pages out of old books for a "call" from Greece.  Here they are - Can you see the different languages I had available to use? This was a lot of fun. I hope Dimitra like them.

To Germany

Some one sent me information about a "call" to send to a show in Berlin. I scanned bits from my e-mail collages. These are the collages that I don't glue down so they change over and over again. I scanned in black and white on sturdy stock, then added old postage stamps.  It turned out pretty good. I'm pleased with it.

Today is a national holiday in the U.S. so mail will have to wait until tomorrow to be sent off across the planet.

It's also Monday, so I posted on Facebook with my MAM - Mail Art Monday project. I posted #124, in case you aren't on the social media.

I urge people to make some mail art. It's easy. Look at my faces, only two or three pieces of paper. Send them to someone. They'll smile. The world will be a better place. Really.

 I sent one or two of my altered landscape postcards to Elke Grundmann, in Germany, over the years. She sent me some in return. I decided to add to her card and return it to her. Maybe she'll alter it again and return it to me.  I added the peeking person.

Sun glasses, lips and hands. These two cards make me smile.  Especially #118 for some reason. Is there one that made you smile more than the other?












As I mentioned before, I was doing a bit of studio cleaning up, and found a couple of Sark sheets  that I couldn't throw away. I sent one to someone with out altering and then decided to make one into an Add and Pass sheet. I hope it gets back to me eventually so I can see what people added to it. Do any of you remember Sark. She was sooo popular for awhile.

 
 My friend Erni Bär, in Hamburg, sends me collages - 100 years of DADA -  and I've been altering them and returning them to him. He seems to enjoy what I do with them. He posts them on Google + .

Here's his most recent send to me, and what I did with it. I'm pretty pleased with my alteration.

 I'm continuting with my eMail Art. This one is from last week. I'm making frequent use of the cut out ART and the arms.

So here's a photo of the wall at the exhibit at the Guggenheim NYC, where we were a few weeks back. We went up specifically to see two exhibits. DadaGlobe at MoMA and this exhibit.

We were very emotional about it. My husband and I both did our foundation art year together at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Our instructors were people who had studied under Moholy-Nagy at the school he created, The Institute of Design.

Going through the exhibit, we could see how much he influenced our own work. I said to my husband - We're his grandchildren!! Our design lineage. It was quite emotional actually seeing where we came from.

The grand girl, Miss Z, was sitting at the studio table with me while I was making Mail Art. She wanted to make some, also, and used what she found at hand. She's really good at using a glue stick and a burnisher (she's only 3!!) and know what she wants regarding composition. She, also, has a sense of humor!
    The Arms are a part of my eMail Art series. I'm having fun with it and when I don't have Global postage handy, I can send one of these.
   Pink is an old card of mine from 2004. I'd printed up some of my collages into cards and I just found this one this morning. I altered with a pink postage stamp and am sending it to the Pink Mail Art call by Tofu.  Find more information HERE.

 I was recycling some old magazines, 1960, that I couldn't have in my studio anymore because of the OLD smell.

I did glean a few images of sweets from an advert. Couldn't resist them.

Postcard Post Secret

Added an arm in this one just for the fun of it.












A friend an I went up to Washington, DC, last week to see the exhibit at the Renwick Gallery. I had to, of course, stop at the US Postal Museum. My friend hadn't  been there before so I was eager to show it to her. There was an exhibit of postcards from Post Secret. Many were on display but so many had been received that there was a huge glassed in area full of bundled cards. This is only a portion of them. I couldn't take a full photo without lots of reflections, so I put my camera against the glass to capture this small portion.
It was a terrific exhibit.




Here's a view of the interior of the downstairs area central space. If you're in the area and haven't yet been to this museum, do go. It's right next to the train station. And entry is gratis.

 These images were on my desk, just like this, so I put them on a blank and glued them down. I like the odd juxtaposition.

 I'm enjoying making compositions with hand, butterflies and moths. Maybe it's cause Spring has sprung in this part of the globe.

A friend sent me these postcards that she'd collected in San Francisco a few years ago.

                      I immediately set to work altering them.  As I found images to collage onto them, I found my self laughing at the captions that came into my mind.
