Now for the Mail Art!!

#145

#146

#147
After a bit of a break, I'm back to my Landscape Beautification Project, except this time - I've used sculpture. The figures were from a brochure I picked up in Quebec City. They add a certain je ne c'est quoi to otherwise boring landscapes. Don't you think so?

The Mary Cassatt figure contemplates & complements the tour boat quite nicely, too.

This morning, I was in a mood for making strips and reached into my tin of cut up paper to make this piece. Adding circles is just right for finalizing the composition.

That's a Yayoi Kusama bit in the middle. She just tickles me with her dots!

I've sent some things to an installation piece in Wales. How cool is that? And, soon I'll be sending something off to Siberia. I've convinced my honey to participate in SPY with me, which will be an exhibit in honor of Graham Greene, in Novosibirsk. More on that soon.

Sunday - the usual, Mail Art and more.

These are my Mail Art artist melds from
Thursday through yesterday.

Why some are tiny and others larger has to do with how they scanned, mysteriously, I had nothing to do with it, really I didn't!
I'm enjoying mixing up artists in this series. My favorite of all is the meet-up of El Anatsui and Renoir, #225. Artists used in this series are Yayoi Kusama of dot fame, El Anatsui, Renoir, Joan Mitchell, Kandinsky, Schwitters, and some artist whose names I forgot to note before cutting up their paintings. OOps, sorry.

I would like to try to make some small pieces that are based on El Anatsui's work. I've been fortunate enough to see a number of his pieces in person. They're made out of bits of flattened metal and linked, so that "cloth" is made. They are beautiful.
Well, I've been busy with two things - my upcoming Tiny Town exhibit, and working on getting my honey a functional website. I still have a few things to do for my exhibit, and some tweaks on the website, but in general, I'm feeling pretty good about both.  Here's the tiny show card that I made to handout to people. It's the size of a business card.
Here's a framed piece that will be shown in the small gallery space that I'm exhibiting in, that shows the postcard that I use for Tiny Town (at the top,) an altered card (in the middle) and a copy of the reverse of that card. When the exhibit ends, that piece will be un-framed and the card mailed out. The remaining unaltered card will be made into the last of Tiny Town. I might send it to the Utrillo Museum in Sannois, France. What do you think? Should I do that?

Wednesday Mail Art Update and Barbara Kruger

We were very fortunate to see the Barbara Kruger installation at the Hirschhorn Museum last month.  Here are a few photos that I took there.

It was pretty incredible to be standing in the space surrounded by typography. Very powerful.
I wish that I had more control over the layout here at blogger. I wanted to group the images, in a cluster but can't seem to make it happen. Oh well.
One of the sales clerks in the shop told us that this installation would be up for a long time since it is so involved. If you're in the D.C. area, check it out.

This is more in my series of Mail Art cards, continuing the theme I started three days ago. I'm creating partnerships between artists. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the name of some of them when I cut the images out of the magazine. Ooops.
If you recognize the artist, let me know. In this care, #221, Joan Mitchell is at the top. Unknown at the bottom.

This card #71, has two unknown artists meeting.
#72

In #72, I have de Kooning (at the top) meeting Joan Mitchell (at the bottom) which could have happened in real life.   In #222, I have El Anatsui (bottom) meeting Yayoi Kusama. I like this meeting very much. How about you? Which is your favorite meet up?

Mail Art and more NYC

#53

#54

Okay, I'm going through a phase it seems! People in the lower corners of the compositions is trending! As well as, dots! and a bit of Washi tape thrown on for good measure, at times.

The women in these two cards are from very different eras. I love that the hair styles are similar.  I'm using cardboard cut from cereal and cracker boxes. I'm so fond of the color and texture of that.

Here I used two pieces of paper that were right at hand on my table. The black paper and the woman were perfect together. I added random text to make a sort of poem. The woman is so happy doing her job, whatever that is. Well, maybe not "happy" but wait, she's a model. Of course, she's happy. She's pretending. I love old advertisements.

This photo was taken at the top of The New Museum located on Bowery St. in lower Manhattan.
I was pointing north west and captured a bit of the building surface. It was so cool to look down on the street and to look across Manhattan, and yet not be TOO high up.  We saw an excellent exhibit on holograms and "Ghosts in the Machine," which was very cool!
Here's the window of a tiny shop - with the name there and a subtitle of Shop Mom & Pop. There were all sorts of handmade items, mainly made by people in New York, or in the U.s. Everything from Soaps to Childrens' toys. Very cool little place. If you're in the West Village, stop by and say "Hi."

We were so happy that we saw these sculptures, after having seen the exhibit at the Whitney of the work of Yayoi Kusama, and also, the windows of the Louis Vuitton shop in Chicago (remember that post?)
These sculptures were in the park along the Hudson River. There was a sign saying NOT to sit or lay on them. ha ha ha ha, who reads signs?! People were really enjoying these. Click HERE for a link to see more of the park and a building on 14th St. wrapped in her work.

Mail Art, rainy day and dots

#30
I don't know what it is about this one, but I really like it a lot (and I made it!) and other people seem to have responded positively to it also. It's got scraps from an old Russian book and 2 different old French books. Old paper is so appealing. A couple of dots unify.

I found a perfect head for Tiny Town. I'm reluctant to make these too often and use up my supply of cards.
Here's the story: Alice's glance at Mme Gilbert was perceived as disdainful. Whether or not it is, is questionable."
Got any other ideas for stories for this one?
It rained yesterday. Here's a view through the car windshield as I waited in the parking lot for C to return from the art supply store. We arrived home just as the skies opened up and a huge rain with thunder came down on us. Yay for the garden plants! It looks like it might do the same today.
You know how much I like dots - a lot - so when we came upon this window display at the Louis Vuitton store on Michigan Boulevard in Chicago last month, I was thrilled.
The displays were a tribute Yayoi Kusama. There is a big display in the New York City store also but with an even bigger dotty part. Here's a fun video by Bill Cunningham. Click HERE. You'll be glad you did. It'll brighten up your day.

Here I am, back again after a long hiatus

No explanations as to my hiatus. It's boring. But I'm back. And here's what I've been making. Lots and lots of these. They...
