Skull Appreciation Day 2013

It’s time for the THIRD ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE SKULL

Notice - a change of exhibit date but not deadline:
The third annual Skull Appreciation Day event will take place in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on 31 May 2013 from 6– 9pm, at the The International Museum of Surgical Science.

On June 4, the Mail Art entries will move to Design Cloud. for viewing in the evening. This is so exciting to get so many different people to see the work you will be entering.

Show your appreciation for skulls. Send your entry as soon as possible as we have a short deadline this year.

All entries will be exhibited in the museum during the event.

Skull Appreciation Day skull and mail art

 Here is the completed piece. Hopefully, some better photos will come out of the exhibit, with details of the piece. I'll get a better photographer to do that for me.

 The butterflies are cut from a map sent to me awhile ago by a friend in Canada. And the circle are from the 100+ year old map. They're floating above via thin wires, which I poked into some styro attached inside the skull. The movement is nice. I'm pleased with the results though I'd do a few things differently if I had it to do over. One thing, make sure the bottom edge of the base was more even. Next time! Oh wait, I'm not doing this again.   I do have lots of map circles left over so I'll have fun figuring out what to do with them.

 Another altered card. I wasn't sure what I could do with this particular piece of art work, but now I want to stop by the museum and get a few more of these.

Skully update

I'm pretty excited about this project now. The skull and base are dry and seem to be pretty stable.

I made lots of butterflies that will fly out of the head. Tomorrow, I'll attached those inside the skull. FIngers crossed that my vision will actually be able to work out.

I can't believe I cut up maps that are over 100 years old. I still can't believe it. These skulls will be sold, hopefully they'll be purchased, and the money will go to The Richmond Peace Education Center.

Enough about me.

Be warned, this is a blatent marketing post. Let me share about my son, the graphic designer. First off, he's the guy who created Skull-a-day. Yup, that guy, my son! My son, the Skull guy. He is founder of a very cool Graphic Design business called ALRdesign. His second book is now available on Amazon and will be published in time for the December holidays. You can see it here.
He was on Martha Stewart and did a TED talk and a GEL workshop. Okay, had enough? Just one more item.....

  His new United Skull of America tee shirt is available. I love this one because it includes ALL of the states. He managed to figure out how to add huge Alaska and tiny Hawaii. If you want to share your amazement for the different sizes of the states in the U.S., get this shirt. It'd be great for kids to learn to recognize the states, right? I know it helped me. Danger of Death

I have lots of images to post from yesterday's visit to the brocante, our thanksgiving dinner, and today's walk to the Jardin des Plantes, however, i'm only going to show you this scary thing that was laying on the ground in a courtyard open to the public. It ties in nicely with the current photos on Skull-a-day, images from Turkey that say the same thing, "danger of death."
