Wednesday Mail Art Update and Barbara Kruger

We were very fortunate to see the Barbara Kruger installation at the Hirschhorn Museum last month.  Here are a few photos that I took there.

It was pretty incredible to be standing in the space surrounded by typography. Very powerful.

I wish that I had more control over the layout here at blogger. I wanted to group the images, in a cluster but can't seem to make it happen. Oh well.

One of the sales clerks in the shop told us that this installation would be up for a long time since it is so involved. If you're in the D.C. area, check it out.

 This is more in my series of Mail Art cards, continuing the theme I started three days ago. I'm creating partnerships between artists. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the name of some of them when I cut the images out of the magazine. Ooops.

In #72, I have de Kooning (at the top) meeting Joan Mitchell (at the bottom) which could have happened in real life.   In #222, I have El Anatsui (bottom) meeting Yayoi Kusama. I like this meeting very much. How about you? Which is your favorite meet up?

 Here's a group of four altered postcards. #212 is another of my honey's cards from his Evidence Box series. I added the woman in the foreground and the moth.

Yesterday's and today's cards take a different turn. Totally different, right? I used images cut from magazines, some art works, some not, to create two and three part compositions.
#220 & #70 are more successful for me than the first two that I did in this vein. I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow. Maybe I like those best because I use bits of de Kooning and Sam Francis paintings in them.

 How exciting, just a few days after we had snow on the ground, we have these. The purple helibore/Lenten rose was in my back yard this morning! I was so happy to see it.

In the front garden, we have several of these plants in white and they are in bloom like crazy! It feels like spring.

Having fun with mail art

 Oh I was so happy when I found this statement. Now that I've passed along my old scraps, I'm open to finding new bits so am, once again, cutting up magazines. I added the Japanese character, friendship, because I wanted a third element in the composition.









 The award wining pumpkin, a fright for Tiny Town's residents, no doubt. I don't always know how I'll use an element, or if it'll work for the Tiny Town series, but when it fits in, I'm pretty happy with the results.

The de Kooning cards that I purchased at VMFA, give me a bit more of a challenge for altering. In the end, with a bit more cutting, I could fit the pipe into the scene.

Since finishing my year long project, I'm making mail art differently than before the project. I have a larger vocabulary to draw on, using my own pieces as references. It's really a very nice consequence of the 365 and in a sense, if proves what Noah's book title says: "365, Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life." I didn't think it would, but in a sense it has.

#181, 182 & 183 Mail Art and something kinda creepy

 No. 181 is entitled something like "The Royals visit Tiny Town and notice a friend."  I really am cracking myself up with altered cards. I hope the recipients get a laugh out of them, too.

 Today's card, #183 is actually the 362nd card that I've made and will send out, as part of my Mail Art a day, since I make more than one a day. I'm almost at 365 cards! We're at the half way mark today.
I call this one: The people of Tiny Town go about their daily lives, as if no one was watching."

Here's the somewhat creepy thing. I spotted this the other day by my neighbors tree. "What the heck is that?" The center is like honey in color and shiny. My reaction was "eew" and yet I was drawn to it's alien-ness and strange beauty. Have you seen a mushroom like this?
